The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
If you haven't read it you should! I highly recommend this book. At first I thought this book would be a drag, because it is written as corespondent letters back and forth between the characters. But thankfully I was terribly wrong and have enjoyed this book immensely. I have cried, I have laughed, and I have longed to go to Guernsey Island and read books and be apart of their Literary Society. Maybe I should start a literary society...nah it would not be as grand as Guernsey Islands.
I can hardly explain the difference between TJC and UT Tyler. I feel like I am actually in college with real professors that care about my education. There are about 20 math tutors on campus and are readily available to aid me in all my questions. Though some I would rather they not help me. For example, I went to the tutoring lab on Monday (my very first time) and was very anxious for the help I would receive. I looked around the room to see who the tutors were, I saw an Asian and a middle eastern who was helping other students. I got super excited and began shuffling my homework papers to find my very first questions. Once found, I readily went to the Asian tutor and presented my question, to my dismay his English was somewhat broken and when he tried to explain what to do I got lost and was unable to fully gain the confidence to ask him to explain further. I was not fully discouraged at this point for I knew there was another tutor in the room, so I skipped to my next question and asked the second tutor. I did not understand any word that came out of his mouth. He took my problem and worked it out on his own and then came back to me and preceded to tell me how to work it out. I did not understand what he wrote or what he was saying so I sat politely and shook my head as if understanding his words. I thought that by falsely assuring him that he would leave me alone and then I could continue on with the problem a different way, but he hovered over me saying "this is right, this is right." I didn't know what to do and so continued working the problem out a different way. He said some other things to me but I do not know what he was saying, probably something about how terrible a student I am and how selfish I was to have him work a problem out for me and then not use a bit of it. Anyway, after he left me alone for a bit I packed my bags and was out of there. Fortunately, I know of some tutors who are great at speaking English AND teaching math. I know that these tutors that helped me on Monday are great and I do not want to discredit them, because they are very smart and have sacrificed a lot to come up to the tutoring lab and give their time and patience to help other students and I think this very honorable. I just thought my experience was fun and wanted to share!
